The lore surrounding our favorite holiday, April 20, cannot be overstated. Previous theories attributed 4/20 to Bob Dylan, referencing his hemp-positive hit, “Everybody Must Get Stoned.” However, there are more facts to support that the glorification of the number stemmed from a few California high school students in the ‘70s nicknamed “The Waldos,” who met every day after school at 4:20 to smoke and search for weed. They referred to this activity as a “420 Louie,” a phrase which made its way through the grapevine to the Grateful Dead, who ignited the pastime across the nation.
